CARNIVAL

We're a few months ahead of schedule, but the brilliance of fall's brightly colored hues reminded us of Carnival & Santo Domingo's vibrant celebration. In the Dominican Republic's capital, Carnival is celebrated with a parade of characters, brilliantly costumed and carrying a vejiga, or dried cow bladders.

The most popular costumes represent religious and traditional characters, the most popular being Diablo Cojuelo (the limping devil). He wears a showy mask, carries his vejiga filled with air and uses it to hit other devils - or spectators, if you're not careful!
